For the last decade and more, light oak furniture has been everywhere. It’s easy to see why. It feels fresh, natural and works well in almost any room.
But here at Simply Bedsides we are noticing darker wood is starting to make a real comeback amongst our all-wooden items.
In interior magazines and posts we see walnut, mahogany, smoked oak and deep brown finishes are appearing more often in modern interiors, bringing a bit more warmth and character back into our homes. Our chestnut Indian bedsides are becoming increasingly popular. Unlike the mid-20th century style, the look now seems less about heavy, old-fashioned furniture and more about using darker pieces to add contrast and make a room feel more considered.

A dark wood bedside table can look brilliant against a light wall, especially when paired with neutral bedding, natural fabrics and a simple lamp. It also works beautifully with colour. Soft greens, sage and pastel shades can make dark wood feel fresh and modern, while dusty pink, pale blue and warm cream create a softer, more relaxed look.

For something bolder, dark wood can also sit well against deeper greens, navy or earthy terracotta. The richer furniture tone helps ground the colour without making the room feel too busy.
You don’t need everything to match either. Dark wood can sit happily alongside light oak, painted furniture or an upholstered bed. In fact, mixing finishes often makes a room feel more relaxed and less like a furniture showroom.

Light and waxed oak certainly isn’t going anywhere, but it’s good to see richer wood tones returning. They can make a bedroom feel warmer, more individual and a little more timeless.
A bedside table is a simple place to start.
